United Nations, Aug 13 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights urged today to take measures to prevent violations in the upcoming elections in that country.

A new report from these entities calls for taking advantage of the important progress in the peace process of the last five years and not repeating the mistakes made during the 2016-2017 electoral process.

In addition, the report points to abuses and violent attacks against civilians during the parliamentary and presidential elections of that stage, but only two of the 44 documented homicides have been investigated and prosecuted, it points out.

The main victims were clan leaders and electoral delegates, including three women, the report said.

Journalists, human rights defenders and political leaders were also victims of the attacks.

UNSOM top official Michael Keating asked Somalia's authorities to establish a system of representation that includes all citizens, based on the principle of one person one vote, facing the elections scheduled for 2020-2021.
